Build it. Test it. Explain it.

Your brief
A 3-game arcade portfolio culminating in Quest of the Goblin King, an interactive dungeon quest.
Build a connected portfolio of 3 playable Python terminal games, culminating in Quest of the Goblin King—a turn-based dungeon battle quest featuring room navigation, player inventory, and modular functions.
Before you begin
Install Thonny IDE (thonny.org), which includes Python 3 bundled in a single one-click installer. Verify you can create, save, and run a .py file. Alternatively, on Chromebooks or devices where software installation is restricted, use the official zero-install web runner at Futurecoder IDE (https://futurecoder.io/course/#ide).
Acceptance checklist
- A working High-Roller Dice Duel script using random numbers, type conversion, and if/else comparisons.
- A Rock-Paper-Scissors Arena with multi-way elif branching, normalized input, and a winning streak accumulator.
- A Secret Vault Codebreaker game powered by a stateful while loop with attempt limits and clean termination.
- An Adventurer's Backpack shop system manipulating Python lists with .append(), .remove(), and in checks.
- A modular Boss Battle combat engine decomposing turns into reusable functions with parameters and return values.
- A completed Quest of the Goblin King game integrating inventory, loops, and combat, verified with a QA test matrix.
Keep a test record
For each check, record the action or input, expected result, actual result, and any repair. Repeat the same test after the repair.
| Action/input | Expected | Actual | Change and retest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invalid weapon input | Friendly warning, no crash | Game reprompts cleanly | Added input membership check |
| Boss damage calculation | HP decreases by rolled value | Health bar updates | Verified return value from function |
Your project tour
- Introduce your arcade portfolio and launch your favorite game.
- Demonstrate navigating through multiple rooms and using a key or potion from your backpack.
- Engage in live turn-based combat and show the dynamic health bar updating.
- Explain one custom function in your code (its parameters, calculations, and return value).
- Demonstrate one edge case you tested (e.g. typing nonsense at a prompt) and how your code handled it safely.
Keep your saved .py files safe in your course folder. Public deployment or cloud hosting is not required.
Sessions, chapters, and optional projects
The course includes six one-hour sessions covering the core learning outcomes. Chapters are learning units, not a timetable: a chapter may span sessions, and a session may cover parts of several chapters. Optional extension projects may be introduced when students demonstrate the core skills and scheduled time remains. Extension coverage or completion is not included in the course commitment.
